What Shopify chargeback protection covers and where it stops

TL;DR
Coverage turns on two reason codes, a seven-day fulfillment clock, and a supported carrier. A reimbursed chargeback still counts in your chargeback rate.
A chargeback lands on an order you assumed was covered. You open it and the Shopify Protect status reads "Not protected."
The order shipped. The customer received it. The status still says no, and now the dispute is yours to work.
What Protect covers, and what you have to do to earn it
Everything below reflects Shopify's Protect documentation and terms of service as I read them in July 2026. Date every rule, because these change.
Protect covers two chargeback reasons and no others: fraudulent, where the cardholder claims they did not authorise the charge, and unrecognized, where they do not recognise the merchant name or location on their statement.
It applies to eligible Shop Pay transactions authorised through Shopify Payments, at no additional cost. On a protected order, the disputed amount and the chargeback fee are reimbursed to you as a credit, and Shopify handles the dispute process.
The terms put the coverage period at 365 days from the order being placed, with the chargeback needing to be received within twelve months of the order date.
It is a United States product. Shopify's documentation requires you to be located in the US with a US Shopify Payments account, and the terms require a bank account at a US bank.
Beyond that, there is nothing to sign and nothing to negotiate. Protection is earned per order, by your fulfillment operation, against a clock.
- Fulfil within 7 days of the order being placed.
- Add tracking from a supported carrier. The terms name USPS, UPS, Canada Post, DHL Express and FedEx; the help documentation lists more, including Shopify Fulfillment Network, TForce Final Mile, Lone Star Overnight, United Delivery Service, CDL Last Mile, Lasership, GLS and Ontrac.
- Carrier marks it in transit within 10 days of the order being placed.
- Every item ships on a supported carrier. One line item on an unsupported carrier and the whole order drops out.
- Tracking added after the deadline does not count. Late is late.
- No digital products, and no buy-online-pickup-in-store items, even when the rest of the order ships normally.
Orders carry one of three statuses: protection active, protected, or not protected. You can filter the orders page by all three, which is the fastest way to find out how much of your volume this actually touches.
Where it stops
Item not received, defective, damaged, not as described: none of it is covered. Those are the reason codes that generate the most merchant work, and they sit entirely outside the product.
Subscription and recurring-billing disputes are covered only if they land as fraudulent or unrecognized. Coded any other way, they are yours.
| Reason code | Covered by Protect |
|---|---|
| Fraudulent | Yes |
| Unrecognized | Yes |
| Subscription canceled | Only if coded fraudulent or unrecognized |
| Item not received | No |
| Defective, damaged, or not as described | No |
Anything that did not check out through Shop Pay is outside it by definition, whatever your fraud analysis says about the order.
Then there is the exclusion worth reading twice. The Protect terms exclude merchants enrolled in a chargeback monitoring program. Coverage is least available exactly when a rising ratio makes you want it most.
Shopify also keeps wide latitude to change the deal. The terms state Shopify is entitled, without liability, to "change, refuse, restrict, limit, suspend, interfere with or interrupt Shopify Protect" for any reason at any time, with existing warrantied transactions preserved.
Protect covers the money, not the ratio
This is the part that gets skipped, and it is the part that decides whether Protect is a strategy or a rebate.
A reimbursed chargeback was still filed. The credit that appears in your account is an accounting event between you and Shopify. It is not a reversal of the dispute, and the networks never see it.
Shopify's own chargeback monitoring documentation says as much in plain language: your chargeback rate is based on all disputes customers open with their banks, not just the ones you lose, and card networks evaluate account health regardless of the dispute outcome. The exclusion for merchants already in a monitoring program follows the same logic from the other direction.
So a store can be fully reimbursed on every fraud chargeback it receives and still walk into a ratio problem. Winning a chargeback does not fix your dispute ratio, and being paid out on one does not either.
Two things still have to happen for the orders Protect does not reach. Disputes forming right now need deflecting before they are filed, because that is the only window where the count changes. Disputes that already landed need working, which is what Reclaim does at no cost and no revenue share.
The honest part
Protect is a good product and it costs nothing. If you are a US Shop Pay store shipping quickly with tracking, turn it on and stop thinking about it. I am not arguing against using it.
Its limits are structural rather than sneaky. Coverage tracks your fulfillment SLA, which means it degrades precisely when you are backordered, in peak, or dealing with a carrier failure. The December orders you most want covered are the ones most likely to miss the seven-day clock.
Every rule here is a snapshot, and the terms give Shopify broad discretion to change them. Read the current version before you build a process on top of any of it.
And I cannot tell you what share of your orders qualify. It depends on your checkout mix, your catalogue, and your carriers, and the only honest way to know is to look at your own data.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify Protect cover item not received chargebacks?
No. Protect covers only two reason codes: fraudulent and unrecognized. Item not received, defective, damaged, and not as described disputes sit entirely outside the product and are yours to work regardless of your fulfillment speed.
Does a Shopify Protect reimbursement remove the chargeback from my chargeback rate?
No. A reimbursed chargeback was still filed. The credit is an accounting event between you and Shopify, not a reversal of the dispute, and Shopify's own documentation says the chargeback rate is based on all disputes customers open with their banks, not just the ones you lose.
Can I get Shopify Protect if my store is enrolled in a chargeback monitoring program?
No. The Protect terms exclude merchants already enrolled in a chargeback monitoring program, so coverage is least available exactly when a rising dispute rate makes a merchant want it most.
Is Shopify Protect available outside the United States?
No. Shopify's documentation requires the store to be located in the US with a US Shopify Payments account, and the terms require a bank account at a US bank. It also only applies to eligible Shop Pay transactions.
The number to pull
Filter last quarter's orders by protection status and work out your protected share. Then pull the same quarter's disputes by reason code.
The overlap tells you what Protect is doing for you. The gap, unprotected orders plus every non-fraud reason code, is your real exposure, and it is the part of the workflow you still own regardless of what the marketing page says.
